The big idea behind every guide

Every kid has their own Connection Account with you.

For most dads, the biggest obstacle isn't love. It was never shown to us, and it was never taught. We want to connect. We just don't know how.

So here's the framework I use with all four of my kids. It works like a bank account: deposits and withdrawals. But the currency isn't money. The currency is connection.

Connection at a young age drives trust. Trust builds openness when kids hit adolescence and the hard things start happening. When those hard things come, you want that account full.

It's not too late. Your kid might be 2, or they might be 16. Either way, the account is still open.

Stories from the guides

Real stories from our home.

Violet, 10 · Barbies

Violet and I used to play Barbies EVERY Saturday and Sunday. It was our ritual. At times I hated it, because it cut into my chores and the things I wanted to do with my weekend, but I did it anyway.

Well, she's 10 now, and sometime in the past 6 months she just stopped. I don't remember our "last time" playing Barbies. This happens all the time. We won't know it's the last time.

Bronson, 16 · After practice

Now that he drives, he'll get home from practice at 10 or 10:30 at night. I'll be awake, waiting for him. He'll want to tell me all about practice.

And usually, I'm completely exhausted. My energy bank is empty. But I'll never shut him down. I'll always listen.

About Gabe
Gabe Trevizo

Hey, I'm Gabe.

Shark Tank entrepreneurMultiple business ownerMarried 25 yearsDad of four

I've built multiple companies, and I've been on Shark Tank. But I have no greater accomplishment than my family. My wife, Cindy, and I are celebrating 25 years of marriage this year, and we're parenting partners.

My dad was hands-on, and he was an amazing father. Today he's my best friend. But he worked long hours, and as an adolescent, I found it hard to connect with him. I didn't have that outlet, and I wanted my kids to have it with me.

So when Bronson was born, I jumped in with two feet: night feedings, rocking, baths, late-night drives to get him to fall asleep. As our family grew, I was so involved, right alongside my wife, that my mom jokingly called me "Mr. Mom." I didn't take it as an insult. I embraced it.

I've built those companies without sacrificing my relationships with my kids. It isn't one or the other. I am proof.

Faith in Jesus Christ is at the core of our family. And I don't have it all figured out. I fail my kids regularly. These guides weren't written by a perfect dad. They were written by a dad who keeps choosing to show up.

What other dads say

From dads who've read it.

Friends of mine who read the guides, in their own words.

“
I thought my kids needed more of my advice. This guide helped me realize they needed more of my attention. I've started asking questions and letting the conversation go where it goes, even when the answers are short. I can't get their little-kid years back, but I can be present for the years we have now.
MarcusDad of two teenagers
“
My daughter is too young to remember any of this, but the guide made me think about the kind of dad she'll grow up knowing. I used to treat time with her as something I squeezed in after everything else. Now I see that holding her, talking to her, and giving her my full attention is already part of building that relationship.
DanielDad of an infant daughter
“
With four little kids, I'm usually thinking about the next thing that needs to get done. This guide helped me notice how often I was in the room but distracted. I'm still a busy dad, but I'm more intentional about stopping, looking my kids in the eye, and joining what they're doing. Those small moments feel different now.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Which guide should I start with?

If your kids are little, or you want the foundation, start with The Foundation. It covers any age. Then pick the season you're in: Guide to Teens, Guide to the Outdoors, Girl Dad Playbook or The Business Dad. If you want all of it, the Complete Collection gets you all five for $79.99.

Do I need to read The Foundation first?

No. Every guide stands on its own. If you've read The Foundation, you'll see the Connection Account carry through, but you don't need to start there.

What's in the Complete Collection?

All five guides as PDFs (183 pages): The Foundation, Guide to Teens, Guide to the Outdoors, Girl Dad Playbook and The Business Dad. Plus two bonuses: the Busy Dad's Bonding Cheat Sheet and six Weekly Dad Challenges. It all comes in one ZIP file. $79.99, vs. $124.95 if you buy the five guides separately. A few of my favorite stories show up in more than one guide, because they belong in each.

How much is each guide?

$24.99 each, one-time. No subscription. Yours to keep.

What format is it? When do I get it?

PDFs, delivered as an instant download as soon as you check out. They read well on your phone, tablet or computer, and you can print them. The checklists are designed to go on the fridge.

I'm a single dad / co-parenting. Is this for me?

Yes. The same playbook works for you. Focus on building the accounts with deposits; that part never changes. The Foundation has a section just for co-parenting and single dads.

My teen and I have drifted. Is it too late?

No. The account is still open. The Foundation has a chapter on repairing a drifted teen, and Guide to Teens closes with "If Your Teen Barely Talks": lean in anyway, and create persistent touch points. If it's really serious, I recommend working with a counselor too.

Is this Christian? I'm not religious.

Faith in Jesus Christ is the core of my family and my fatherhood, and you'll see it woven through the guides. If you share that faith, I hope it encourages you. If you don't, you're welcome here all the same. Every tool in these guides works for any dad who's willing to show up.

I'm busy. How much time does this take?

The chapters are short. Read one a night, or jump straight to the one you need most. Most steps are small: a phone in a drawer, a 20-minute timer, a car ride where they run the music. You don't need a flexible schedule. You need to not check out.

Your move, Dad

You don't have to be perfect. You have to be present.

Put the phone down. Make a deposit. Then make another one tomorrow.

It's not too late. Not for you, and not for your kids.

Be a legendary dad.

Presence is the best present. — Gabe
